Barry C. Capelli, Senior VP Rosenblatt Ship Design Division
Barry Capelli joined The Columbia Group as manager of the Rosenblatt Ship Design Division when the Washington DC portion of the 60 year old legacy Rosenblatt ship design company became a part of TCG in June 2008. Mr. Capelli had been successfully managing the Mid Atlantic portion of this naval architecture and marine engineering company for the past five years. He had previously served with AMSEC LLC / M. Rosenblatt & Son as a Technical Director.
Mr. Capelli, a retired Captain in the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), has over 37 years of experience in all aspects of the lifecycle of naval and Coast Guard (CG) ships including design, construction, maintenance, alteration, repair, modernization and disposal. Mr. Capelli has extensive engineering management experience, much of it gained during his career of over 30 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his last tour, he served as Director of Engineering at USCG Headquarters where he had overall responsibility for the CG's naval, aeronautical, civil and environmental engineering support programs. This encompassed management of the half billion dollar annual budget to keep 200 aircraft, 220 ships and a $7 billion dollar shore infrastructure in good working order. Previously, Mr. Capelli served as the Chief of Naval Engineering at USCG Headquarters, Fleet Maintenance Manager for all CG vessels in the Pacific, and the Chief of Vessel Logistics at USCG Headquarters. Earlier in his career, he served as the Resident Inspector for the construction of 270' medium endurance cutters in a commercial shipyard, as well as, the Port Engineer for many classes of vessels ranging in size from boats to polar icebreakers. He served over 8 years of sea duty including service as Chief Engineer of a polar icebreaker and a medium endurance cutter.
Mr. Capelli received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine. Additionally, he served a naval engineering apprenticeship in the Coast Guard with follow-on training which eventually included over 2,000 hours of specialized training.
