Larry Jones, VP Navy Ship Programs
Larry Jones has oversight over all of The Columbia Group's Ship related Navy Program Support.
Previously, Larry Jones was a Captain for the U.S. Navy. His first at-sea assignment was as First Lieutenant on board the USS SEMMES (DDG 18) where he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and achieved his Surface Warfare qualification. Duty then followed as Chemistry/Radiological Assistant in the Reactor Department on board the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) during a major complex overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and subsequent Fleet workups, where he also completed his Nuclear Engineer Officer qualification. Following Department Head Training, he was assigned as Operations Officer on the USS CALIFORNIA (CGN 36) where he made two deployments to the Persian Gulf, conducted special operations in the Bering Sea and completed an around the world cruise as a CVN escort. He next served as Reactor Officer on the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70), where he again completed two deployments to the Persian Gulf and a complex overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Mr. Jones then assumed command of the USS NICHOLSON (DD 982), where he conducted operations in all major oceans of the world including independent operations in the Persian Gulf, and a major overhaul at Charleston Naval Shipyard.
Mr. Jones' assignments ashore included duties as the Surface Nuclear Placement Officer and Community Manager at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, and Branch Head for the Commander in Chief Liaison Office/J-8 of the Joint Staff. Selected for Major Program Management in the Surface Acquisition Community, he served as the Chief of Staff to the Program Executive Officer for Expeditionary Warfare prior to his selection as the Inactive Ships Program Manager, where he had oversight over the inactivation, safekeeping, donation, and disposal of all of the Navy.s conventionally powered ships and service craft.
Mr. Jones was commissioned and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the United States Naval Academy in 1976. He earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He is currently a Doctoral candidate in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech.
